When you read “Gem City Gypsy” you must conceptualize a whole world.
Gypsies.
Socialites.
The Wright Brothers.
The KKK.
Industrialization leading to WWI.
So many vivid elements. The story is about a gypsy girl who must leap
over bodies to survive the sinking Lusitania and escape
murderous Germans who kill her mentor in Ireland. She later
returns to her hometown, recreated as a wealthy woman trying to meld into the
upper class. Neci Star captures our imagination and heart as she claws
her way out of one class and into the abyss of another.

Q: Welcome
to The Writer's Life! Now that your book
has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process. Can we begin by having you take us at the
beginning? Where did you come up with
the idea to write your book?
Twelve years ago I joined my family at the spectacular, historical Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio http://www.woodlandcemetery.org/ to bury my father. I took a walk through this wooded, verdant place and came upon a giant statute and a memorial to a gypsy named Matilda Stanley. I was stunned that I never knew there were famous “royal” gypsies in my hometown.
Q: How
hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could
pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?
I researched gypsies and famous people from the pre WW1 era very carefully. It’s really helpful to go to the town and visit the sites.
Q: Who
is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?
I used a wonderful editor and she recommended the small publisher who primarily handled mysteries.
Q: Is
there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?
I’ve published two other books. Each one is a singular journey.
Q:
Can you describe the feeling when you saw your published book for the first
time?
It’s exciting but in some ways it’s a letdown after all the anticipation.
Q:
What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?
I’m currently writing a mystery based in the present and that is all I can reveal.
Q:
Fun question: How does your book contribute to making this world a better
place?
My book is a story about discovery. The central character, Neci Stans, loves animals and shows all of us how to interact with them. She is flawed but loves her family and generally makes good decisions---like we all should.
Q:
Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?
I am trying to say that we all must find our way and that getting to the top is not always what we think it will be---once we are there. It’s the journey that is most important.
Q: Thank
you again for this interview! Do you
have any final words?
Enjoy every day and every minute and be nice and caring to animals. WeAre the top dogs but the way we treat the creatures beneath us says so much about who we are.
