The chance of a lifetime . . . or just another bad decision?

Delaney Lavender Brooks needs to grow up. At least, according to her parents. After getting evicted from her apartment and wrecking her car, Laney is almost ready to trade in her paintbrushes and surrender to a more sensible 9-to-5 existence. Almost. Until she’s awarded an internship at a prestigious art gallery in Paris. What else can the free-spirited artist do but follow her dreams? Even if her latest attempt at chasing rainbows might cost her a real future . . .

Once in the city of lights, Laney is almost undone by the glaring truth: maybe she isn’t sophisticated or talented enough to make it as an artist—or an independent woman, for that matter. And when she’s hotly pursued by a seductive Frenchman, she has to wonder if she’s about to be a fool for love, too. Soon Laney’s greatest challenge is not proving herself to her parents, but having the courage to live the life—and love—of her dreams . . .

“Leah Marie Brown has a wily way of bringing her stories to life with sharp dialogue and drop-dead sexy characters.” —Cindy Miles, National Bestselling Author

Cover Reveal: The Thief by Michele Hauf

Inside the Book:

Title: The Thief
Author: Michele Hauf
Publisher: Lyrical Press
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Format: Ecopy
The Elite Crimes Unit works behind the scenes of Interpol—and employs some of the world’s most talented criminal minds. Because as everyone knows, it takes a thief to catch a thief—or to seduce one . . .

The old farmhouse in the French countryside is a refuge for former jewel thief Josephine Deveraux. Admittedly, there aren’t many men in the vicinity, but she has her cat to cuddle up with. It’s a far cry from her former life, constantly running from the law, and she’s enjoying her peace . . . until the intruder in the three-piece suit tackles her. He wants her back in the game, helping with a heist—and he’s not above making threats to get his way.

Little does Josephine know that notorious—and notoriously charming—thief, Xavier Lambert, is after the very same 180-carat prize she’s being blackmailed to steal. To his chagrin, he’s doing it not as a free agent, but as a member of the Elite Crimes Unit—the team he was forced to join when his brilliant career came to a sudden end. And little does Xavier know that his comeback is about to include a stranger’s kiss, a stinging slap, and a hunt for missing treasure—along with the infuriatingly sexy woman who’s outfoxing him . . .

Book Excerpt:

Prologue
Near Pozières, France 1917

            We came here to die.
My heart beats the rhythm of the shell blast. Boom. Boom. Boom. Ready to burst, ready to break. Boom. Boom. Boom.
            "Get down!"
An explosion of earth, light, and fire twenty feet beyond our trench.
"Close one that?" McCragh bellows into my ear.
I only manage a nod. Too many sounds echoing through my body, the steady pulsing of my heart, the tinny ringing in my ears. But silence can be just as bad I have learned. Silence can be death. My discovery weighs heavy on my mind. What will I do? Do I have a choice?
"What are the orders?" asks a young man, whose name I cannot remember, standing at my other side, leaning heavily against the dirt wall of our trench, his feet squelching thickly in the mud underfoot.
"Awaiting orders," says McCragh with a sneer. "Won't do us much good, waiting 'ere much longer, better get out, better to be moving."
The nameless young man shies away from us, from the bitter words of the burly Scot
Before I can respond, another man, the Runner, comes catapulting into the ditch. I help him right himself. His face is smeared with dirt and dust, but this mask cannot conceal his tender age. I shudder. We will all die here today.
"Orders are to stay. Enemy" he gasps for air, "enemy is showing signs of retreat."
            "Retreat?" McCragh frowns. "Bleedin' cowards!"
"Are you certain?" I ask, feeling the quiver in my voice.
"Yessir, orders from above. Told us to wait it out."
"Right, well done, son," I say, though the boy could be my brother. "Go on, then. Best make the rounds." I try to sound calm, reassuring, to keep my voice steady, while I know I fail and only hope my fear is disguised by the screams and blasts from above.
"Yessir." He takes a breath and sets off at a brisk trot, as fast as the bodies crowded into this tight space will allow.
"Another day to live in hell, then. Lovely." Lewis, a Cornish fellow with a missing left ear comments wryly as he materializes at our side.
"Sounds about right." McCragh rolls his eyes, but makes an involuntary sign of the cross nonetheless.
"Four months they told us," Rawlins, another man with a raspy voice adds, sticking a cigarette between his thin, flaking lips. "'Four months, lads, serve King and Country', eh? Bleedin' liars."
"Watch what you're saying, or I'll 'ave you for treason!" McCragh winks and rubs his beard.

Time passes slowly. The sky goes from gray to purple to black tinged orange, and still the thrumming of the guns, the intermittent blasts, grow only slightly fainter, move only slightly farther away. We crouch together in the black, damp, misery of our trench, our only light is the flicker of orange at the end of a cigarette.
"What will you do when this is all over?" comes the whispered voice of a young nameless soldier, who has drifted to my side.
            "If I'm not—" I start.
"If yer not dead," chimes in McCragh. "If we get out of this pile o' shite in one bit, you mean, laddie?"
"Stop pissing about, McCragh," Rawlins says sharply. It is an unspoken rule not to mention the very real likelihood of us never seeing the end of this war.
"Oh, right," comes McCragh's chastised reply. "I fer one will be gettin' back me ol' missus. Seein' the kids."
"How many have you got, then?" Lewis asks, keen for any distraction from the agony of numb legs, and the even worse terror raging above us.
"Two. Two little girls. Bessie and Mary. And I thank the Lord fer that. I'll never be sendin' them off to be blown to bits. I won't let them out of my sight again. Future husbands beware."
We chuckle, though I do not doubt the sincerity of his statement. Future husbands beware indeed!
"And you? How about you, son?" Lewis asks.
"Just go home," I say. "See my mother, father. See my brothers."
            "How many?"
"Two. One" I swallow, a sudden tightness in my throat, "one is here, somewhere . . ." I let the word float into the night, knowing the others understand. Silence descends upon our group, and soon I hear the faint sound of snoring. Can it be? Is one of them actually sleeping while the sky is falling down on us?

After some moments, I sense a sudden motion to my right. I turn my head, though I cannot see my hand before my eyes.
"Hello?" I whisper, but before I can hear an answer, a sharp stab of pain swells in my chest. I gasp, my hand flying up, meeting . . . meeting wetness. Wetness? Sticky . . .
I can't breathe; I grapple around, touching the soft, earthen wall, the rough fabric of a uniform.
"I-I . . ." I swallow hard, pain explodes inside me, louder, more forceful than the shells above. My mouth feels dry, I try retching, but nothing comes. I am on the ground. "Help." I croak.
I feel a hand on my shoulder. Hear voices, raised in concern. All I see is blackness and stars.
            We came here to die.

With Chayce Maynard on the run, Ryleigh and Jackson can finally begin rebuilding their kingdom. But when a cryptic message suggests Chayce was seen in Argonas, chaos creeps back into Cymmera once more . . .

Alone, but for the few people she was able to save, Ryleigh must decide whether to reclaim her kingdom or remain in the new realm forever, forsaking all she left behind . . .

Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Book Excerpt:

As she slid past her throne, Ryleigh’s sword caught on the arm, and she took a step back and untangled it. She’d never get used to wearing the stupid thing everywhere she went. If not for Jackson’s insistence, it’d probably be stuffed under her bed beside the baseball bat she kept hidden there.
She pulled open a drawer on the side table behind her throne and rifled through the papers she’d stuffed in there in search of her leather appointment book. If she couldn’t find answers, may as well get some work done. It was either that or dwell on Jackson’s mission and the terror it brought. She pressed a hand against her heaving stomach. No. She couldn’t think about that. She had more immediate problems she might actually be able to do something about.
Several meetings had to be scheduled, and without writing them down, she’d never keep track of where she was supposed to be. Especially with her mind so jumbled with images of Jackson going up against Chayce.
She snatched the book, shoved the drawers shut, and turned to leave.
Ryleigh’s vision blurred. The air shimmered in the center of the throne room, and her ears popped.
She ripped her sword from its sheath even as the portal opened.
A seven-foot-tall beast built of solid muscle tore through the portal. A triple headed flail swung from one massive hand.

Interview with Don Weeks/Jonathan Weeks, authors of 'Scarecrow on the Marsh'

For over thirty years, Don Weeks was among the most popular radio personalities in the Capital District region of New York State. He received a Marconi Award for radio excellence in 2005 and was inducted into to the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame four years later. He had just completed a rough draft of Scarecrow on the Marsh when he died of Merkle Cell Cancer in March of 2015. Author royalties from this project will be donated to the WGY Christmas Wish Campaign, which benefits a variety of charitable causes. Weeks worked tirelessly over the years to help raise money for the campaign.
Jonathan Weeks has published several books on the topic of baseball--four non-fiction projects and one novel. His latest work, a mystery-thriller entitled Scarecrow on the Marsh, is a posthumous collaboration with his father--former radio icon Don Weeks, who passed away in 2015. Weeks finished the book in fulfillment of a promise he made to his father before he died.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  Where did you come up with the idea to write your book?

My father, Don Weeks, came up with the idea. For thirty years, he was among the most popular radio personalities in the Capital Region of New York State. He won a Marconi Award and was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Despite his accomplishments, there was one bucket list item left unchecked at the time of his retirement. He always wanted to publish a novel. He completed a rough draft of Scarecrow on the Marsh before falling ill with Merkel Cell Cancer around Christmas 2014. It’s a rare and progressive disease with only 1,500 cases being diagnosed in the U.S. every year. Within a few months, my father was gone. As he lay dying, I promised him I would complete the novel for him and try to find a publisher.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

The book was especially hard for me because I was dealing with the loss of my father. I missed him terribly and didn’t want to tamper with his work. But let’s face it—a rough draft is far from perfect. And the edits I ended up making went far beyond simple spelling and punctuation. At times I felt like I was betraying him. I tried very hard to preserve every element of his story. I tried to channel his writing style. I did a lot of fact-checking especially when it came to the setting. Scarecrow on the Marsh is set on Cape Cod. My father had been there recently and was intimately familiar with the place. I hadn’t been to the Cape in over fifteen years and my memory was somewhat foggy.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

I reached out to more than thirty publishers before signing with All Things That Matter Press. They’re a small, indie outfit with a print-on-demand format. I like the POD model. It reduces publishing costs and increases author royalties. POD publishers are more receptive to first time authors. Since it’s not a self-publishing arrangement, there are absolutely no author fees.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

Scarecrow on the Marsh is not my first book. I had previously published five books of my own—mostly non-fiction. But finishing my Father’s novel was by far the most difficult project I have ever taken on. It saddens me to think that my Father isn’t around to see his book in print. It was one of his lifelong dreams.

Q: What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?

Before Scarecrow on the Marsh, my publishing career was limited to sports writing. I have a baseball book coming out next spring entitled Latino Stars in the Major Leagues. I’m currently working on a fiction project that falls into the category of alternative history. In the future, I’d like to write more fiction.

Q: What’s one fact about your book that would surprise people?

It took over thirty years to complete. My father wrote part of a rough draft in 1979 before the demands of his radio job derailed the project. The original manuscript and notes were lost at some point and never recovered. My Father was able to complete a “new” version before he died. I worked on the book for six months before submitting it to publishers.

Q: Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?

The book itself doesn’t have any specific message but the loss of my father has taught me something. If you reach out to people with kindness and humor, you can live on in their hearts and minds. This might sound cliché but it’s absolutely true.

Q: Thank you again for this interview!  Do you have any final words?

All author royalties for Scarecrow on the Marsh will be donated to my father’s favorite charity—the Christmas Wish Campaign. It’s sponsored by the radio station he worked at for thirty years (810 WGY). The charity benefits sick and underprivileged children in upstate New York.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  Where did you come up with the idea to write your book?

I came across a book written in the 1970's, The Control of Candy Jones, by Donald Bain, a fascinating true story of a beautiful pin-up model who later discovered (while under hypnosis) that she had been hypno-programmed to act as a spy for the CIA. Strange as this tale may seem, it was so convincingly written that it lead me to do further research, and lo and behold, the CIA actually had a mind control program called MKULTRA, where subjects were hypnotized, given hallucinatory drugs, and were tortured in order to fracture their personalities. Although this plot was used in the 1959 novel The Manchurian Candidate and the two film versions that followed, I thought to myself that this would make a great plot for a work of erotica.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

Peace and quiet, and having time alone are essential ingredients for me to get ideas, but these conditions are not so easily met, especially if you're married. Finding a time where I would not be distracted was the hardest challenge I faced.

As for other writers, I'm hesitant to give tips. I write my stories on the fly, letting the story and characters take on a life of their own. Others might outline the book before they even start. In any case, for fiction, sharp, crisp dialogue is crucial.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

Because my novel was not mainstream, but a sub-genre of erotica, or I might say, X-rated fiction, I decided that the easiest way to get published in the shortest amount of time was to self-publish. There was no need for an agent to take time to decide if s/he could sell it to a publishing house. I self-published using a service called BookBaby. They handle everything from formatting to distribution.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

Not yet. I think the surprises are still ahead. Or maybe disappointment if the novel is not well received.

Q: What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?

I'm currently writing Book Two of the series, Healing, and my plan is to have it released in February of 2017. I envision three books in the series Girl Within Girl and after that I'll go on to something else.

Q: What’s one fact about your book that would surprise people?

That there actually was a program of mind control, and part of that project was to see if they could create multiple personalities that would not have any memory of what each personality did. This was done in an attempt to create the perfect spy who would not reveal secrets; in other words, the Manchurian Candidate is a fact.

Q: Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?

One objective I had was to make people aware that mind control does exist. I guess the other goal I had was to write an erotic novel that had a strong plot as well as hot sexy passages.

Q: Thank you again for this interview!  Do you have any final words?

If anyone would like to know more about me, they can check out my Facebook author page, though I have to warn people that some things I post are explicitly sexy. I believe that our sexuality is still a mystery to us and I try to explore it using that page as a platform. Other than that, I wish everyone a good day.
