Buried Angel by Kim Smith l Q&A + Blog Tour + Giveaway

Our guest today is the lovely Kim Smith, author of the cozy mystery novel, Buried Angel.

Kim is the hostess for the popular radio show, Introducing WRITERS! Radio show on Blog Talk Radio. She is also the author of the zany, Shannon Wallace mystery series available now from Red Rose Publishing. You can visit Kim’s website at www.mkimsmith.com.

Kim is her today to answer a few of my questions and if you want to leave her a question or a comment in the comment box below, she'll be more than happy to answer your questions, too! She is also going to give away an electronic copy of her book, Buried Angel! See details after the interview and please, leave your email address along with your comment or question so we can let you know if you won!

Q. Thank you for this interview, Kim. Can we begin by having you tell us why you chose to write cozy mysteries?

I don’t think I chose them. I think they chose me! I actually had written several stories, one a fantasy, and another a historical romance and found myself a little burned out on such intense writing. I settled down to do something more fun and less stressful (haha) and away we went. Shannon and Dwayne were the outcome and boy did they have fun with me!
Q. Who was your favorite character in Buried Angel and why?

I just love Shannon. She will always be forever my favorite character. She is like a nutty professor. She cannot do things that she knows is wrong. Especially when it is to help out her friends.

Q. Who was your least favorite character?

I didn’t enjoy writing the bad guys. I guess I have never met anyone like them face-to-face and so it was a real foreign affair to write them.

Q. Can you tell us about the setting and why you chose it?

I write about a small town, which is a sort of mixture of two towns close to me. Writing the setting is like breathing for me. I live here! Writing about being in the cemetery was not quite as easy. I have spent far too much time there in my life and so the unease of being in that place for Shannon and Dwayne is just my inner thought-work coming to the surface.

Q. What was the hardest part to write?

Getting started. Seriously, if I could make myself sit down when I need to be writing, and just do the work, I would be a very prolific author.

Q. What was the inspiration behind the story?

It’s funny. A hearse. Yes, I did. I wrote this story after following a hearse. Sigh.

Q. Thank you for this interview, Kim. We wish you much success!

Thank you for having me on the site. I love visiting with readers and writers and look forward to getting to know them better!

  3. Hi Kim! Wish I could have reviewed this one (ebooks are too hard for me) but I do love a good cozy mystery. And I do think that's the first time I've heard of a hearse as inspiration LOL.

  6. What a fun interview!! No need to enter me, just loving to read all the great things that Kim is writing along her tour. A hearse?! Very cool!! Don't you love when such simple things can just send your world spiraling into something so awesome?! I'm almost finished reading Buried Angel and love it, as I knew I would, lol. Shannon and Dwayne are such delightful characters!!! I have to say that anyone who loves the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich will LOVE this series!!!!

  7. Thank you all for stopping in. I know a hearse, right? But that is how it went. I also want to say that I wrote that Shannon cannot do things that are wrong. What I MEANT to say is she cannot NOT do things that are wrong, especially to help out a friend. She's pretty complex!

  8. A fun interview, Kim! I completely relate to what you said about "sitting down and writing" when you should. I am much the same way. But I find my end result is much stronger, and much more to my liking when I write when I want to. I know that goes against what almost every other writer says to do, but until they start ghost writing my stories for me they'll have to deal with it ;^)

Looks like you're enjoying yourself on this tour, too. Very glad to see that!

  16. aww thanks so much you guys!! MUUUUAHH~!

Cheryl I wanted to find a way to get to know other authors and find out about their writing lives and their books (I am a huge writer groupie!) so that is what led me to begin the show. Now I am so addicted to it, I cannot imagine NOT doing it. Hope to have a LOT of great authors to share with everyone in 2010!
