Guest Post: ' 3 Quick Tips to Go From Crumbs to the Full Meal' by Raquel Whiting Gilmer

3 Quick Tips to Go from Crumbs to the Full Meal – Improving Your Self-Esteem to Improve Your Dating Experience

Since I released my novel, Crumbs Aren’t Enough, I’ve been asked by a number of women, “How did you go from accepting crumbs to demanding the full meal?”  My answer is always the same and it’s pretty simple.  I had to first feel better about myself. And once I improved my self-esteem, I could seek out what’s best for me in a relationship and demand it.

So how did I improve my self-esteem?  Well, I first had to understand where my self-esteem went off the rails.  See I don’t think any of us starts off with low self-esteem, this is a condition that we develop and a lot of it comes from outside forces.

When I look at pictures of myself as a young child, I see a little girl who was fearless and felt great about herself.  She thought she was awesome and she was.  But, then she heard “you’re fat,” “you need to lose weight,” “you’re ugly.”  These put downs slowly but surely chipped away at my self-esteem and that little girl no longer thought she was awesome.

Like Charlie, the main character in Crumbs Aren’t Enough, I felt like I wasn’t good enough and I didn’t deserve the best from the men I dated.  Through therapy, I re-learned that I am awesome and learned strategies to help me see myself in a positive light so I could seek out the best for myself.

What types of strategies?  Well, there are probably too many to share in this brief post but here are three which I think were critical.

1.       Say Nice Things About Yourself
I had to combat those negative voices with positive talk from myself – basically, I had to learn to say nice things about myself to myself.  I don’t know about you, but I am my toughest critic.  I had to learn to give myself a break and stop saying negative things about me to me.  I had to learn to say kind and positive things to myself.  I realized that even though there were areas in which I could improve, that didn’t make me a bad person.  I was a great person and I had to tell myself that every day.  For example, the biggest challenge area that affected my self-esteem was definitely body image. So instead of speaking negatively about my body, I forced myself to say five nice things about my body.  This was really hard at first.  But, by forcing myself to do it daily, I started to see myself in a more positive light. I continue this practice today.

2.       Write Down Your Strengths
I bet if I asked you to tell me five of your weaknesses, you would rattle them off to me with no problem, but if I asked for five of your strengths you would probably have to think about them.  It is absolutely crucial to know your strengths and write them down.  I know when I first heard this I felt like writing my strengths would make me seem arrogant, but it doesn’t.  If you can’t articulate your strengths, how will anyone else see them?

3.       Set Achievable Goals
If you are anything like me, your goals are always grandiose.  I never wanted to lose five pounds in a month,  I always wanted to lose 20 pounds or so a month, which was unrealistic. Then I would fail and feel bad about myself, which impacted my self-esteem.   Through therapy, I learned to set more modest goals that were achievable, and learned to establish realistic time frames.  When I hit these modest goals, I celebrated each success and gained confidence and trust in myself.  This process can work for you too.
After you start to work on these strategies, you have to practice, practice, practice.  Like Jamie explained to Charlie in Crumbs Aren’t Enough, practice makes perfect.  When you first learn a new song on the piano, you have to practice before you are any good.  When you learn a new dance routine, you have to practice it before you have confidence that you will do it well.  It’s the same notion when you are rebuilding your self-esteem.  It’s not going to happen overnight because – guess what – it didn’t break down overnight.  So you have to force yourself to implement these strategies daily.
Once my self-esteem improved, I started to question whether I was getting the best out of my relationships.  I didn’t just accept what was given to me.  Slowly but surely, by building up my self-esteem, the light bulb went on and I realized I was much happier unattached and on my own instead of settling for another bad relationship. My dating experiences improved as my self-esteem improved, too.

More on that later . . .

--------------------------------------------------------

Hi, my name is Raquel Whiting Gilmer and I am a wife, daughter, aspiring mother (I don’t have any kids yet but I want them.), sister, friend, small group leader, lawyer, entrepreneur, confidant, advisor, blogger, twitter attempter, soon to be published author, and accepter of crumbs. Well, a recovering crumbs accepter. What’s a crumb accepter? Is it as bad as it sounds? It’s bad, but it’s preventable and curable.
Freedictionary.com defines a crumb as a small fragment, scrap, or portion. And it defines accepter as one who accepts. So a crumbs accepter is one who accepts small scraps. No bueno, right? How did I get like this? Well, I think my low self-esteem was the root cause of it. And I’ve learned that when your self-esteem is bad then you will accept anything including crumbs in all areas of your life. BTW, my biggest crumbs area was definitely my relationships with men.
Things are different now and I have committed myself to Live Crumbs Free. Live crumbs free? Yes, I am committed to not accepting crumbs in any area of my life. But to get to this point, I had to do some work. I first had to work on my self-esteem. And after lots of therapy I got to a place where not only did I have high self-esteem but I started a website, www.perfectlyme.com, and a girls’ program, Perfectly Me Girls to encourage other women and girls to embrace and love who they are and not judge themselves by the world’s standards. Our motto is I’m not perfect, I’m just Perfectly Me.

Once my self-esteem was on the rise, I could start to look at the crumbs in my life. And I knew I had to deal with my personal crumbs and I’m happy to report that after many failed relationships and mounds of crumbs, I met the love of my life and married him. Yay!!! I have the full meal and then some now and it has changed my life. I want everyone to have that full meal and I know how bad the crumbs are so I’ve written my first novel about a woman struggling with relationships who finally figures out that Crumbs Aren’t Enough. I hope you will read my blog at www.raquelwhiting.com, check out my novel, and follow me on twitter, @perfectlyraquel, as I dole out advice and wisdom (my limited wisdom) on keeping your self-esteem high and getting rid of the crumbs.

Guest Post: 'Genre Confusion - Urban Vs. Contemporary Fanasy' by Scott Eder

Genre Confusion (Doh!) – Urban VS. Contemporary Fantasy
By Scott Eder

Hello. My name is Scott, and I write Urban Fantasy. Wait, no, that's what I did a few weeks ago, before the revelation, before DragonCon.  Today, in my post-DC era, I write Contemporary Fantasy. And the funny thing is that I haven't changed a thing. I still write the same novels, but my genre perception has shifted thanks to the wisdom presented at Dragon*Con.

I've heard the advice not to worry about genre. Let an agent or editor figure out into which Fantasy subgenre the book should fall since the writer is not typically the best judge. That's all well and good after the fact, once the book is sold and the decisions on how to market it are made. What about when a writer is discussing his work with publishing professionals or other authors?

When talking about my book, framing it in terms of genre is a natural thing. It's meant to set a certain expectation or set of rules in which the plot unfolds and the characters develop. So, when talking about my book, Knight of Flame, I start off by telling people it's Urban Fantasy with strong romantic elements. Here’s the kicker…I was wrong.

But, Scott, say it aint so. I wish I could. I feel kinda silly about it, actually. Thank goodness I came to the realization myself instead of having someone have to point it out to me. I don't claim to know a lot about this industry into which I'm trying hard to break into. In fact, I know fairly little.  That's why I keep asking questions, hanging with those who do know about this crazy business, and attending different cons and seminars. Look out World Fantasy, you're next.

I got my first inkling of my genre faux pas early on. I'd been trying to identify my niche, my stand-out factor. What made my Urban Fantasy novel unique? I realized that one of the differences is Point of View (POV). My novel has multiple POVs. I haven't seen that much in UF. Most UF stories turn upon the axis of a single driving character—typically a badass detective or bounty hunter protecting their slice of the world from the nefarious creatures of the night.

I was good with the multiple POV thing. I started talking that up and building my case on how my book differed from the others. That went well until I started asking questions of NYT bestselling UF authors about it and got some strange looks. Perhaps there's a reason there isn't much multiple POV in UF.

It seems that the general consensus about UF is that the pacing is very fast. That single POV ass-kicker drives through the story at a very fast pace. The characters don't typically amble about smelling the flowers. They find and fight the badies threatening their town. The tone is dark and gritty, like the dirty streets and water of the cityscape in which they prowl. UF is the noire of the Fantasy genre.

And that's where it all went crazy. Yeah, I see the dark and the grit and the detective aspect of UF stories. Mine decidedly did not have those elements. I realized the only things my novel and UF had in common was that it occurred in a city (for a little while) and brought magical elements into a real-world setting.

Sorry, but that's just not enough. So, Knight of Flame is not Urban Fantasy. It's Contemporary or Modern Fantasy. It doesn't have the grit and dark tones of a Faith Hunter, Jim Butcher, or Kim Harrison novel. It's more like the sense of wonder and camaraderie of the Companions of the Hall from R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books. I loved the interplay between Drizzt, King Bruenor, Wulfgar, Regis, and Cattie-brie. They fed off each other while they saved the world from utter destruction time and again. I wanted to make sure that my characters had that type of relationship and wrote that in from the beginning. Duh. I should have realized.

The book held true to genre, but the writer got lost somewhere along the way.

Have fun,
Scott

Guest Post: How the Kochia Chronicles Came to Be by Khanjan Mehta

Over the last decade, I have led poverty alleviation and sustainable development projects in Kenya, Tanzania, India, China and other countries. These projects range from telemedicine systems and ruggedized biomedical devices to low-cost greenhouses, solar food dryers and rainwater harvesting systems. Between the humble successes and the countless failures, I have gained a good understanding of the simplicity and complexity of challenges faced by these resource-constrained communities.

Every time I return home from fieldwork, my family and friends, my students’ parents, other faculty, and community members ask me about the projects. As I start explaining how our rural health or greenhouse businesses work, they quickly jump in, “That’s wonderful! Instead of giving them a fish, you are teaching them how to fish.” While I politely smile and acknowledge their Eureka moment, that proverb never fails to makes me cringe.

How do I tell them that Kenyans are expert fishermen, having honed their skills over millennia. In just a few minutes, they can return with a fresh Tilapia, or even a Nile Perch. The literacy rate in Kenya is 87% and most people speak English. Almost everyone has access to a cellphone and broadband internet is available across the entire country. And yet, Kenya is amongst the poorest countries in the world with access to food, safe water, sanitation, and primary healthcare a distant dream for millions of people.

The popular image of Africa, and one that is reinforced by media outlets, is based on stereotypes of endemic violence, corruption, disease and starvation. I wanted to correct this negative and oversimplified perspective. I wanted to educate readers about “how things work” in one little corner of Africa and showcase the people’s ingenuity, innovation and resilience. So I integrated my personal experiences with scientific research, statistics, norms, approaches and emotions to weave a series of short stories called The Kochia Chronicles. I conducted research specifically for this book over a three-year period and spent a year writing it. Several translators helped me navigate the context and an amazing sketch artist brought the stories to life through a series of 27 sketches.

The Kochia Chronicles offer readers a glimpse of life, problems and innovations in developing communities in the backdrop of the rapidly evolving political, social, economic, technological and global context. The stories delve into a wide range of issues including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the schooling system, traditional alcohols, gender issues, counterfeit electronics, and the inner workings of the orphanage business. And yes, one story discusses exactly why the “teach a man to fish” adage is actually impractical in many parts of the world where highly-skilled fishermen cannot access the millions of fish in their vicinity due to a variety of cultural, economic or political reasons. So, come and join Obongo, Okello, Sister Phoebe and friends as they unravel the complexities of community challenges and design practical solutions to address them.

Never Giving Up & Never Wanting To by Barry Tutor - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

407187_coverABOUT NEVER GIVING UP & NEVER WANTING TO

Like most, I knew about Alzheimer’s disease. It causes old people to forget. When my relationship with this disease began, it highlighted how little I knew. Following my widowed mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, I researched this disease to gain insight about my new role as her caregiver and decision maker. What I learned and experienced during her affliction still left me somewhat unprepared for what was yet to come. Sixteen months following my mother’s diagnosis, my dear wife and best friend was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Though now I was familiar with this silent killer, my wife’s diagnosis set into motion many changes and challenges in our lives. Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every sixty-eight seconds. Currently, Alzheimer’s is the only disease in the top-ten causes of death that is on the increase and has no means of prevention and no possible cure. Given these facts, support for those afflicted relies on increasing levels of caregiving as the disease progresses. Let me explain something about this “old folk’s disease.” Alzheimer’s affects more than just parents and grandparents. It is also the disease of siblings, spouses, and children. Alzheimer’s forces many families to decide between home versus institutional care. An estimated fifteen million caregivers provide some level of care to the Alzheimer’s victims still living at home. No matter what level of care you are providing, the importance of preparation is paramount. Arming yourself with knowledge begins that preparation process. I was unprepared for the roller-coaster ride my life became as the sole caregiver for two Alzheimer’s victims. To meet their varied challenges, I adapted and developed multiple techniques for targeted personalized care. If only I knew then what I know now. By sharing my knowledge and experience, I hope to better prepare you for your caregiving journey.

God's Little Instrument by Sandra C. Hall - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

ABOUT GOD'S LITTLE INSTRUMENT

This book is about relationship and the joy of loving our Lord because He loves us for who we are not for who we think we should be. This book is inviting you to set aside your bucket lists. The poetry encourages you to slow down and to view God through the eyes of a child. To remember when your only goal in life was to please Him and not the world. Read the poems and lose yourself in the artwork that will take you to heaven and back. This book is meant to be enjoyed by the whole spectrum of life; from the very young right through to the old, ( I should know I'm 61) as you share it with your loved ones. It's about embracing the little child in us that God so fearfully and wonderfully made. One look at the dynamic illustrations drawn by my niece Danielle Marie Robinson and you will feel inspired to sing praises to the Lord. The poems were written as celebrations of key moments in the authors life that touched her very soul. God never said keep his blessings to yourself so she shares her vision of being God's little instrument with you. Enjoy and be blessed.

ABOUT SANDRA C. HALL

She has been working as a legal assistant the past twenty-three years in an extremely busy law office. She is the mother of three adults and grandmother of six wonderful grandchildren, with numbers seven and eight putting in their appearance this summer. The unexpected loss of a younger sibling eleven years ago opened the floodgates of her heart and the pent up poetry about her life just poured out. The onslaught was so intense that she would wake in the middle of the night and have to scribble the words down on a pad by the bed. Unable to contain it she wrote poems on envelopes, scraps of paper even ran down the street one time after a poem about her mother that the wind blew away. Now at this phase in her life her writing is all about her legacy. She wants to leave behind a body of work that will bless her family as well as others for years to come. Most of her poetry is like small prayers of gratitude to God that she prays will be knocking at God's pearly gates long after she is gone. Her poetry is about the joy of life and how we will never find peace unless we embrace our inner child and go before God's throne with a contrite heart. She has previously written and self-published two other poetry books; (The Poetic Offerings of a Creatively Frustrated Christian and God Whispers). Currently she is working on a fantasy love story.

Guest post: "The Rules (and Lack Thereof) of Writing," by Gabriel Valjan

Write what you know. Write what you don't know. Obey the laws of grammar and syntax. Break the rules of grammar and syntax. Speech is what you hear. Dialogue is what you imagine between fictional characters. A beat is time in the corner for the boxer to rest or time for the boxer to deliver the punch. Characters live and breathe by how they act, however flawed or noble they are, and not because someone tells you they do. Point of view is a camera; change the lens and you change what you see and whence you see it. Visual is in the mind and it is also white space on the page. Edit for copy, for structure, but always have someone else do it because you won't see it. Criticism is always constructive, never personal. Voice is yours and only yours, as unique as your fingertips, your earlobes, and your handwriting. As you can see, there are rules and there are no rules.

Writing is about creation and expression; it is a function of the intangible human spirit. The act of creative expression, be it oral or written, nearly always involves the person who is doing that creating through words to be sitting down. Spoken or written, the story is created from a seated position. Tell the story that you have inside you. You have no control over whether you’ll make money (or not), be famous or forever obscure. Read widely other authors and genres to see how they “work” and why what they did did work. Should you be fortunate to meet your readers, stay until you have met every last one of them. You’ll be the better person. Don’t compete with other writers. Somebody will always be better at something than you. Just be you. Respect the time your readers spend with you and be grateful that they chose to spend that precious time with you.
