About the Book
Was it the accumulated wounds to the environment that had finally triggered the nanotech plague or was it simply one more step in a shrewdly crafted plan to replace us with humans 2.0? As I write this at least one pair of these transhumans breathe the same air as us, and there are likely many more. They may look like us, they may even be almost human, but they are also cybernetic and will live for an extraordinary length of time. Trust me, their goals are not the same as ours. It was not a natural plague that almost drove humankind to extinction but an attack from within, turning our own biology against us. Scientists discovered all too late an artificial entity, a sentient machine foolishly created in the image of god, had been studying us and genetically altering us for longer than we can imagine. Perhaps it is because of this god-machine that we evolved into creatures who can think and speak and know our own mortality? This silicon god is so different from us that we may never truly understand it, but what we do know is that it is terrifyingly intelligent and it hates us. What we do know is that it tried to eradicate us from the face of our planet and then stopped for no discernible reason. What we do know is that its work is not done.

PUYB Blog Tour: A Must Read by Don Stewart

We have a wonderful guest today!  Don Stewart, author of Past Medical History is here to give us insight into the writing of his book....

************

A Must-Read…
"A must-read for every pre-med and medical student."

Gosh, we've been hearing that a lot lately.

***

I wrote Past Medical History mainly as a diversion. As a working artist I found myself answering the same questions over and over: What made you decide to be an artist? Where does all the detail come from? Why do you spend so much time researching each piece?

All those questions seemed to boil down to one answer: I didn't like being a doctor.

“I took an art class in college, and it stuck (because I didn't like being a doctor).” “My surgical training taught me to stand in one place for hours and do meticulous work – a habit that carried over into my art (because I didn't like being a doctor).” “I was immersed in academic research at every stage of my education: research papers in high school & college; reading, discussing and defending journal articles; conducting scientific research projects of my own before discovering I didn't like being a doctor.”

But those sorts of answers only generated more questions – questions I had become adept at answering using stories from my past. As I began to write these stories down, it became clear that I had good reasons why I didn't like being a doctor. Lots of them.

There was a great deal about the process of medical education, and the practice of medicine in today’s world that didn't sit well with me at all, and those things revealed themselves in my stories. So I continued to write.

I want to emphasize that the book was not meant to be a critique of the medical education system. It is a collection of events and experiences, a chronicle of things that happened to a particular person in an interesting and, by most measures, a very enviable position. The fact that many of these circumstances were unpleasant for me was simply a part of the story, part of the explanation of an abrupt and unusual career change.

Soon after the book was released, however, we learned that those events and experiences were not unique to the author. They just weren’t often talked about.

It’s not surprising then, that one of the most common responses to Past Medical History has been the suggestion that we find a way to make the book available to medical students, to pre-meds, and even to pre-pre-meds – anyone who is working toward a career in the medical profession.

One college junior wrote: “When we, as premedical students, are shadowing physicians, we see what the ‘professional’ life is like, not the education that we spend most of our life trying to survive. In short, the best book I could have read before applying to medical school.”

One pediatric resident was even more to the point: “Don captured the essence of many of the problems in medicine that no one wants to talk about and those that have similar thoughts don’t want to admit… [He] puts to words the inner turmoil many of us have about a career in medicine. This book should be required reading for pre-meds or medical students before they face the reality of residency.”

I can't argue with his sentiment.

In response to this sort of feedback, we have arranged to give away more than a hundred free books to health professions students at every phase of the educational process. Hopefully this gesture will give students the forewarning they need to survive the unpleasantness and confusion that a medical education entails.  Others may find the permission they need to move on to other, more satisfying occupational pursuits. Some may simply enjoy the stories.

Fortunately, and perhaps most important to me, the collection of stories that became Past Medical History not only explained why I stopped wanting to be a doctor, but also revealed why I chose my current profession:

“I took an art class in college, and it stuck because I’ve been an artist all along.”

About the Author:

Don Stewart has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Art, with honors, from Birmingham-Southern College, and an MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He also served a year-long surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic, where he published some of his first composite drawings, and won awards for poetry and short fiction.

Dr. Stewart’s short stories have since been published in Pulse–voices from the heart of medicine, The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, The Placebo Journal, and The Journal of Irreproducible Results, where he is listed as honorary Art Editor. For four years he served as Contributing Editor to Informal Rounds, the newsletter of the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association.

For the past quarter century he has made his living as a self-styled Visual Humorist, hammering words and pictures together at the DS Art Studio Gallery in Birmingham: www.DSArt.com.  You can also find him at www.PastMedicalHistoryBook.com.

His latest book is the autobiography, Past Medical History.

About the Book:

Past Medical History is a compilation of short stories chronicling the life of Dr. Don Stewart, who grew up with the singular goal of becoming a physician, then quit the day he earned his medical license to make a life and a living as an artist. It’s The Devil Wears Prada meets The House of God, with a character who sees his own career circling the drain, pronounces it DOA, and turfs himself to an art studio for treatment. It’s Patch Adams, with an attitude; The Things They Carried, dressed up in scrubs and a white lab coat.

This series of stories draws a clear picture of a doctor who recognized the pitfalls of his chosen profession, discharged himself from the hospital, then took his life in a more creative, and far healthier direction.

Interview with Angela Fiddler, author of 'The Care and Feeding of Sex Demons'

Angela Fiddler wrote her first erotic novel as a birthday present to a friend who had requested kneeling and vampires.  While the vampires come and go in the story, the kneeling remains.  Angela likes smut, dark humor and stories that mix erotica with raw emotion.  She talks about writing and her characters at www.angelafiddler.com.

Her latest book is the paranormal erotica, The Care and Feeding of Sex Demons.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  Where did you come up with the idea to write your book?

Writing paranormal, there are only five to seven different creatures that can be evil sexily. Sex demons, incubi and succubi are one of them. I wrote a simple story back in 2009 called Cy Gets a Sex Demon where as a reward, my main character is literally given a sex demon for a job well done. As the sex demon made it clear that he didn’t like being forced, Cy backed away and gave him his autonomy. It wasn’t because he was involved in his own fledging relationship, it was because Cy honestly believed that keeping anyone as a sex slave was wrong, even if they feed off of sex.

I love books where the titles are the theme and the plot. The Care and Feeding of Sex Demons assumes you’ve never read the 2009 book and starts the world over again. In that world, sex Demons have one defense. If their master treats them worse than they would be in hell, they have the freedom to hurt their master and return to hell to escape it. Due to the nature of the abuse, “hurt” usually translates as overkill. It doesn’t help their PR, but every demon has to make their own choice given their own circumstances. The book begins with the sex demons of Calgary no longer being able to feed, and if a sex demon can’t feed, they’re not happy. If you own a sex demon, a demon not happy can is very dangerous.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

I would say if paranormal romances are all about giving your characters what they want at the end of the book, the entire book should be about the characters fighting to get what they want. This means that they have to be responsible to overcome the impossible odds standing between them and their potential successful future. Keep the characters on a constant forward motion throughout the book. There should be at least three perfectly valid reasons why the characters shouldn’t be together and at the end, that happiness should come at a cost of something valuable.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

I publish through Loose Id. I found them eight years ago now, through a friend of a friend of a friend. I submitted my manuscript just like everyone else and got picked up within the month.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

I knew when I was writing Castoffs that it felt better than most of the things I had done to that point. When I submitted it, I had no idea how much the editing process can strip out what you tried to say and put in what you had wanted to say from the beginning. We have this idea that the author sits alone, types out “the end” and then sends the novel on its way and it’s complete. What you submit is just raw material for the finished book that comes out.

Q: What other books (if any) are you working on and when will they be published?

I’m working on the second book of my Tempest series. Book one, Coral were his Bones should be out in April/May. As a selkie, Finn mates for a very long life. He and Devon have grown up with their lives entwined and intended for each other, but a cruel man stole his heart away and bound him in servitude. As the years pass, Finn gets sucked deeper into his memories until he’s drowning. Ancient laws aren’t broken easily but Finn is fading away. When Finn comes to see Devon on the one night a year he’s free, they both know it’s Finn last chance. He already bears the brands for his misbehavior. If he gets caught, he knows he will be in more trouble than he’s worth.

Q: What’s your favorite place to hang out online?

My internet history can tell you it’s Absolutewrite, Facebook and Cracked. I love Cracked, but if you want to maintain your faith in humanity, do not read the comments. There are some really ignorant people out there who insist on telling people very emphatically about their ignorance.

Q: Finally, what message (if any) are you trying to get across with your book?

In order to tell Cy’s continuing story, I couldn’t tell a boy-meets-boy format. I really wanted to reboot the series as a romance from its urban fantasy roots, but that meant staying within the established relationship from the first book. Most romances can add the thrill of the chase to the actual plot happening, but this chase had been over for five years.

I wanted to write about the lull in relationships could push the what is between Cy and Patrick into something it might not have been if the events of the plot hadn’t happened.

I wanted to show that gay relationships are just as hard as straight. Regardless of the gender or genders involved, sometimes you know exactly what your partner is thinking and sometimes despite the sum total of everything you know, you still haven’t got a clue.

Q: Thank you again for this interview!  Do you have any final words?

I blog about my work and writing in general at www.angelafiddler.com. You can also find me on twitter at angela_fiddler. Thanks so much for having me.

Genre: Family/Law/Religion
Author: James Valladares, PhD

The clergy abuse scandal has posed the greatest threat to the traditional understanding of the Catholic priesthood since the Protestant Reformation. Now, as then, the deadliest attacks are coming from within the Church. In an attempt to improve a system that allowed a small minority of the clergy to violate children and ameliorate the gross negligence of some bishops who recycled these predators, the American bishops instituted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in 2002. It is, unfortunately, doing the Church more harm than good. In Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast, Fr. James Valladares shows how justice and charity have been violated by some bishops in dealing with accused priests. He examines the pertinent canons that guide the Church’s judicial system and finds that these are often ignored or wrongly applied. He provides true cases that highlight the injustice of the process and the agony of priests who have been subjected to the charter’s draconian mandates. The Church has incurred tremendous financial losses because of settlements rising from both legitimate and false claims. Her image has been marred by the secular media, which has taken advantage of the crisis. Even so, we often fail to understand how trivial these are in comparison to the damage done to the priesthood by the enactment of the charter’s policies. This is the most pressing issue that the bishops need to address.

When Boniface Nwugwo left his hometown in Eastern Nigeria in 1980 to study in America, he had only $4600 to his name for his tuition, his faith in God and an unquenchable thirst to succeed in America. In this revealing, inspiring and compelling memoir, Boniface with uncompromising candor, tells his story of courage, insurmountable struggles, and triumphs that he and many West African immigrants faced before and after coming to America demonstrating that you can reach your dreams if you persevere. From modest beginnings as the son of a teacher in his native Imo State of Nigeria, Boniface Nwugwo overcame poverty to distinguish himself as a brilliant academic and achieve a respectable career in the information technology industry. Through his story and the sample stories of other West African immigrants, America’s promise as land of immigrants with infinite possibilities are rekindled in this self-revealing and self-fulfilling book.

authorhouse
Can you please tell us about your book and why you wrote it?

The Silent Immigrants is a book about my challenges before and after emigrating from Nigeria to Brockport, New York at age twenty. While I expected a rough time as a foreign student, it quickly turned into a clash of cultures. The book also talks about the courage, challenges and triumphs that many West African immigrants faced before and after coming to America demonstrating that you can reach your dreams if you persevere.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced writing it?

One of the biggest challenges was picking the 4-5 stories of other West African immigrants to include in the book. Another challenge was mustering the energy to focus on the actual writing in the midst of other demands such as job and family priorities.

Do you plan subsequent books?

Yes. I plan to write more stories about my early years and experience surviving a civil war in Nigeria that lasted 30 months.

When and why did you begin writing?

I've always written technical articles and reviews for the past 20 years. Writing my memoir was something I decided to do about 5 years ago because I wanted to get it out of the way and put my experiences in writing so that my kids and the new generation coming behind me will learn something from my experiences and those of other immigrants.

What is your greatest strength as an author?

My greatest strength is story telling.

Did writing this book teach you anything?

Yes, I learned many things about the art of writing and getting published. It can be demanding but with due diligence, one can do it.

About Boniface Nwugwo

Boniface Chibuzo Nwugwo was born on February 16, 1960 at Alaenyi Ogwa, in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State (part of what was the Eastern Region) of Nigeria. He attended Obazu Community Grammar School Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State, graduating in 1978. After graduation from secondary school he spent 18 months working for First Bank of Nigeria while waiting to gain admission into a university. After almost two years of waiting, he travelled to America to pursue his post-secondary education even though he did not have all the resources required to make such a trip. From the second month of his freshman year at the State University of New York at Brockport, he started working for the school’s Shipping & Receiving Department until his graduation. He graduated from the State University of New York at Brockport in 1984, with a B.S. in Computer Science.  To avenge his mother's mistreatment at the hands of her upper-crust employer, self-made real estate tycoon Marcus Pearson needs entree into their exclusive world. Pamela will do anything to save her favorite cause, even agree to a marriage of convenience. The altruistic "it-girl" isn't worried about the pretend passion with Marcus turning real; she's sworn off powerful, driven men who use her for her family's connections. So she'll deny the way her pulse races with one look from his crystalline blue eyes. And he'll ignore the way his body throbs with each kiss from her full lips. Because there's no way he'll lose his blue-collar heart to the blue-blooded beauty.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life, Tracey. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?

A: Like most writers, I’ve always written. It started with short stories, poems, and plays when I was younger and progressed from there. In college, when I wanted a break from studying I would write romantic short stories for my friends, starring them and whichever boy they liked at the moment. It was only in 2010, when my youngest son started pre-school, that I considered trying to become a published author.

Q: Can you please tell us about your book and why you wrote it?

A: The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride is a contemporary marriage of convenience romance featuring an interracial couple. I chose to write an interracial romance because it mimicked my own experience and I wanted to see myself, a woman of color, represented in the genre I loved. I saw the scene first, before anything else came together. I had a picture of this elegant, sophisticated woman waiting outside of an executive’s office all day for a chance to talk with him. Finally, when it was clear that she wasn’t going to be let in, she gets annoyed and bursts into his office. I thought, what would make a woman do that? What would she care about to go to such an extreme?

Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced writing it?

A: Making my characters three-dimensional. It’s easy to fall into the trap of not letting them make hard decisions, so they’re likeable. But conflict drives story and no one is perfect. As long as I give motivation for why my characters act, readers will understand and follow along on their journey.

Q: Do you have a press kit and what do you include in it? Does this press kit appear online and, if so, can you provide a link to where we can see it?

A: I do have a press kit although I haven’t put it online yet. It contains my photo, bio and a press release.

Q: Have you either spoken to groups of people about your book or appeared on radio or TV? What are your upcoming plans for doing so?

A: I’ve spoken to Virginia Romance Writers about what happens in the year after an author signs their first publishing contract and I’m scheduled to do a reading from Tycoon at the Lady Jane’s Salon in Bethesda, MD on March 8th.

Q: Do you have an agent and, if so, would you mind sharing who he/is is? If not, have you ever had an agent or do you even feel it’s necessary to have one?

A: I do have an agent. I’m represented by the wonderful Nalini Akolekar from Spencerhill Literary Agency. Getting an agent was always part of my publishing plan and I’ve been very happy with the service she has provided me.

Q: Did you, your agent or publisher prepare a media blitz before the book came out and would you like to tell us about it?

A: I’m with a small publisher who does some promotion, less than the big six traditional, but more than most small publishers. There was less focus on promotion before the book released. They put their efforts into release day and the weeks that followed. I’ve done some promotion, as well. I’ve bought some ads on targeted sites, worked on my social media presence and done some giveaways.

Q: Do you plan subsequent books?

A: The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride is the first in the “In Love With A Tycoon” series. The second and third books are already in the works.

Q: Thank you for your interview, Tracey. Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and how everyone can buy your book?

A: Thank you for having me. The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes and All Romance Ebooks. You can find me on my website (http://www.traceylivesay.com), Facebook (TraceyLivesayAuthor), Goodreads & Twitter (@tlivesay).

Australian novelist Ally Blake is a redhead, a footy fan, and a devotee of the language of Aaron Sorkin. She is addicted to stationery and M&Ms, weak in the face of Italians and firefighters, married to a spectacular and ever-patient man, mum to three beings of pure delight, and a firm believer in love, luck, and fairies.   She is also a best-selling romance writer with more than twenty-five fun, flirty romance novels under her belt.  Published through Harlequin Mills and Boon and Entangled Publishing, and author of the romantic adventure Facebook page 50 Days with Rose, over three million copies of Ally's books have sold worldwide.  For Ally's take on life, writing, and other fancy stuff, follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

Australian born Kelly Hunter writes short contemporary romance for Harlequin Mills &Boon and even shorter contemporary romance for herself. First published in 2007, Kelly's books have finalled once in the Romance Writers of Australia's RUBY award, six times in the Australian Romance Readers Awards, twice in the Romantic Times Readers Choice Awards and have been nominated three times for a RITA. Thus inspired, Kelly keeps writing them.
Why short category romance and not a bigger wordcount? Aside from a deep and abiding admiration for the shorter form, Kelly has a three-month book-writing attention span. If she ever learns to write faster or pay attention longer she may write longer books.

Kimberly Lang isn’t one of those people who always knew she wanted to be a writer. She actually wanted to be a ballerina, but puberty failed to deliver the required swan-like elegance. That dream scuttled, she went on to get her Master’s Degree in English – and she has the bartending skills to prove it. At her husband’s insistence, she quit teaching in 2007 to write full-time, and in May 2008, sold her first book to Harlequin’s London office. That book, The Secret Mistress Arrangement, debuted at number nine on the Borders Series Bestseller list and won the 2009 National Readers’ Choice Award for Best First Book. Since then, Kimberly’s books have appeared on the USA Today, Amazon, Borders, and Bookscan bestseller lists, and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. (And, yes, that’s really cool.) She’s married to her college sweetheart, whom she affectionately (but appropriately) calls her Darling Geek, and is Mom to the most brilliant and beautiful child on the planet (aptly nicknamed Amazing Child). She started taking yoga-based fitness because she eats way too many jelly beans while writing, and became an instructor once she figured out that spending time with her butt over her head helped spark her creativity. More than one sticky plot point has been solved in the Down Dog position.  She has no hobbies because she doesn’t have time, but if she did, they’d include knitting, skiing and ballroom dancing, because they sound like they might be fun.
