AUTHOR INTERVIEW: M.K. SCOTT AUTHOR OF REQUIEM FOR A RESCUE DOG QUEEN @morgankwyatt

M. K. Scott is the husband and wife writing team behind The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries and The Talking Dog Detective Agency. Morgan K Wyatt is the general wordsmith, while her husband, Scott, is the grammar hammer and physics specialist. He uses his engineering skills to explain how fast a body falls when pushed over a cliff and various other felonious activities. The Internet and experts in the field provide forensic information, while the recipes and B and B details require a more hands-on approach.  Morgan’s daughter, who manages a hotel, provides guest horror stories to fuel the plot lines. The couple’s dog, Chance, is the inspiration behind Jasper, Donna’s dog. Overall, both are a fun series to create and read.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  When did you come up with the idea to write your book?

The Talking Dog Agency series came about in two parts. I was asked at a local signing why I had no books set in Indiana. Actually, I was asked this several times. Up until then, I had no clue locals wanted a cozy mystery set in Indiana.

The second part of the equation as a dog lover I feel pets can communicate with their owners. I decided to put a twist on it, by allowing Max, the dog, to speak in English as opposed to canine speak.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

The easy part was the setting since it was a familiar one. Anyone who decides to set a story in an unknown place should at least visit the spot. I did manage to work in a couple restaurant visits as research.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

Currently, my husband and I run Sleeping Dragon Press. We started it to publish my YA books that didn’t quite fit into the genre niche, but started publishing all our books under the imprint after my traditional publisher went bankrupt about two years ago.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

The work involved in promoting it. Often at book signings or festivals, my carnie skills kick in since half of sales is just getting people to your booth. All those years of helping my daughter sell Girl Scout cookies and working the 4-H booth at the county fair finally paid off.

Q: What other books are you working on and when will they be published?

Bark Twice for Danger will be out in April 2018.
The Skeleton Wore Diamonds will be out in early March 2018.

Q: What’s one fact about your book that would surprise people?

Besides that, one of the central characters is a crime solving dog, it would have to be that my husband and I can work together without artistic tempers flaring.

Q: Finally, what message are you trying to get across with your book?

Don’t make assumptions since things are seldom what they seem. (If they were, it would be a very short story.)

Q: Thank you again for this interview!  Do you have any final words?

M K Scott is a husband and wife cozy mystery writing team. In July, we will be releasing a new series entitled The Way Over the Hill Gang.  A group of nursing home residents decide to tackle cold cases with hilarious results.
